How Much Data Does Google Maps Use?

How Much Internet Data Does Google Maps Takes To Use SmartPhone As A GPS

How much data does Google Maps navigation use?

For many of us, if we didn't have our phones we'd be lost, quite literally.  Thanks to Google Maps, directions are just a click away.

But how much is that convenient navigation costing us in cell phone data?

How much data does Google Maps use per mile or hour?

It's estimated that you'll use about 6MB in data for 10 minutes, 18MB in of 30 minutes and 36MB in data of 1 hour of Google Maps usage. However, this is only an approximate number since there are a variety of factors--like amount of cached data, device, mapped location-- that will effect your data usage.
  • Because of this, it may be worth installing an app like Data Tracker that allows you to see exactly how much data you use per app.

  • If you know you use a lot of data, it might be a good idea to look for plans that allow heavy data usage, including unlimited data plans.

There are was to ensure Google Maps uses even less data than that, though.

Downloading Google Maps so you can use them offline on your phone is easy. We’ve outlined the steps in Download Google Maps for offline use blog post. You can download a map for offline use on both Android and on iPhone.

If you decide to use Google Maps offline, there are some sacrifices. While you can search for nearby establishments or points of interest, the information you see will only be as recent as the last data you downloaded. Things like holiday hours may not be accounted for, as an example. If you decide to deny Google Maps access to mobile data at all, you won’t have access to traffic or other real-time road information. Finally, you can only get driving directions when operating Google Maps offline. As it stands, cyclists, transit users or pedestrians need not apply.

How to Check How Much Data You Have Left

You can check how much data you have used by performing the following:

For an Android phone:
  • Tap on Settings
  • Press on "Data usage"
For iPhone users:
  • Go to "Settings"
  • Select "Cellular"
You can also access this information by logging into your account via your cell phone provider's site or by checking the information included in your cell phone provider's app.

  1. I think you have some typos in your article. You say "It's estimated that you'll use about 6MB in data for 10 minutes, 18MB in of 30 minutes and 36MB in data of 1 hour of Google Maps usage.". I believe you meant to write .6, 1.8, and 3.6. These are MUCH more in line with what other articles are reporting. Can you clarify if you had a typo? If not, how come your estimates are about 10 times higher than everyone else's? Thanks!
